"I enjoyed this, it has great game play, great music, and great presentation. I also liked the weapons system more than Rich, I like the way that you lose weapons as you take damage and this forces you to change strategy on the fly. I'm not going to give it the full score as I do prefer a couple other shmups from the era but its still a very good game. "

"Definitely one of the better shoot-em-up's on the Super Nintendo, Axelay is a very polished title with impressive effects and very good music. The weapons system in the game is quite reasonable and it does lend some strategy to the game, but truth be told I spend much of the time sticking to a few key weapons. I do have some minor issues with the health system in the game, which has you losing weapons when you're shot, but dying instantly when colliding with something. This system feels quite unbalanced to me as often I'll play terribly and get all the way through a level because I'm shot over and over and over, but then play fantastically another time but a couple collissions end the run almost immediately. Still, its a minor complaint and does little to detract from the game's quality."
